  runaway hit
« on: January 16, 2010, 08:48:47 AM » by Tom Riordan
my latest book has sold a bit

a voice says
leave wren press
and go with
one of the behemoths

that would make more sense
after an amateurish job
but the world is topsy-turvy isn't it

you can't call harcourt brace and say
nobody ever buys my books
will you breathe life into this stalled career

yet wren
bore ten straight flops with grace
deserves one moment in the sun

two if the next book has a good run

and what of me
the schlub who hung in there
should I abandon him

for a kahuna riding one rogue hit

that's what ambition says
don't blink
this is your chance

although the voice of balance says
go find the boy who brought you
to this dance
and don't lose sight of him again

A very convincing voice, Tom, and a noble choice. (Hey, even my crits are poetical.)

I like the use of Wren for a small name.

Cheers

Thanks for the peak, David. If we don't imagine our own nobility, who will? Tom

I don't talk much about how I feel about publishing poetry, because my opinion is just for me, but this about says it.

There's one good reason I like the idea of publishing poetry--I would be forced to organize it, which is what I'm trying to do now, but I keep going in circles.

A poet dares be just so clear and no clearer.... He unzips the veil from beauty, but does not remove it.  A poet utterly clear is a trifle glaring.  ~E.B. White

Enjoyed. And I like the idea of imagining nobility for ourselves...it could be my only choice!

thanks for reading, marc. if imagining nobility is half as satisfying as imagining revenge, it's a pretty good choice. tom
