Hoi Polloi

This pond is small,
selective.
Ten billion raindrops
in the river,
lake and sea
fought thirsty dirt,
terrain and gravity
to join us here
with this small knot
of paratactic toads,
but only the top
million or so
have arrived.

I ask in all humility, Tom, and with an acute consciousness that I may get a slap round the ear 'ole, but does
Hoi Polloi
mean what you think it means?
Because, if it does, I don't get it.
Cheers

Our little hoi pond here at PC has relatively few paratactic toads, though the quarters can get quiet close sometimes.
Much enjoyed.

Thanks, Cheryl. Yes, a fun term. David, no slap! I did originally think about titling the poem "Elite" but then thought "Hoi Polloi" even more apt and ironic. It sounds like I may have missed there, but yes, I am referring to the commonfolk. Tom

No miss! I love the connection between a teaming Koi pond and the hoi pond of the human masses!

How public--like a Frog--
