STUNG BY A BUTTERFLY

She hits him squarely
with the correct pronunciation of Thoreau.
"It's 'thorough,' you know."
He counters quickly,
"If Walden had wi-fi then, surely, he would have blogged."
She is staggered momentarily by the speculation.
"Yes, a transcendental twitterer,"
she concedes the round.
But his prime sparring days are behind him
and his footwork has grown leaden.
He falls, hapless victim, to a powerful one-two combination
for which he has no defense.
Her youth, her beauty pummel him,
leaving bruises not likely to fade with time.
Twenty years ago he could have knocked her out.

Thank you! I'm glad that you picked up on the "float like a butterfly, sting like a bee" allusion.

Excellent, Lester. Somehow I wish you could have found room for rope and dope, but a sweet thing nonetheless.
Cheers

Fantastic. I will now think of this poem whenever I hear the names Ali, Fox, Grant, etc...

I like this a lot, everything about it, especially the surprising and apt last lines.
