The long tail of submissions

I spent a happy time trying to track down an old submission. There are so many, sitting there, grumbling to themselves, passing waspish remarks on one another, mouldering in the dark. What is the point of this I wonder? Might it not be better for all submissions not picked to "lapse" after say a year?
Or indeed to be "culled" after such a period?

I (for one) at times enjoy going back to old pages - sometimes I will find a gem that got overlooked, sometimes I find one that I wanted to move to picks that I had forgotten about, sometimes I find poems with only 1 or 2 comments....those I like to bring around for another read.
I even go back to find poems I have submitted and that did not get picked when I'm in the mood to revise an old one -
so I guess I like to have the submissions folder full of poems just waiting for another look.
I know that others do the same.
Just my 2 cents - M

Thanks M, I too enjoy dipping into the deep submissions waters. I guess I'm just wondering aloud whether 7573 (and rising) is a manage-able number.... and whether it wouldn't be an alternative to archive.

Having an archive by year might be an idea - but it would have to be accessible and allow comments to bring the piece back to the current years submission area. Let me toss the idea out to Jay and see what the possibilities are and how it fits in with his vision of the site - thanks for the idea.

Kevin, I don't think they just sit there. I think the spiders from the search engines add them to the pile of pages under the author's name. They add to the author's web presence. Unlike magazine published poems, which disappear into bookshelves or the recycle bin, archived poems -- I believe -- have a life on the web. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong.

dear Kevin
i see that some members delete their poems after having had a discussion about their submits
and i have kept a sort of archive by posting my poems first to my journal and then from time to time
choosing something to place in the submit lounge of PC
archiving submits in a more selective way with their comments could become
an interesting historical writing tool for visitors to the site
and there are one heck of a lot more visitors than
active members here.
glad you have offered the topic for discussion
a warm smile
