  those fears
« on: September 02, 2010, 01:09:18 AM » by emma bastasa
the things that we
fear sometimes are nothing but shadows

of our hands and feet
and the words of our mouths
and sighs

when we wake up
and go outside the door of the house
naked

we soon find that all these shadows
are nothing but the makings
of the room

when the sun rises
as we bathe in its light
all the fears
are finally gone

we will find ourselves
naked on the grass
and too beautiful to
behold

Very much like the rhythm of this, Emma. Look forward to reading more of your work.

What does bother me somewhat is the change in verb tense in the last stanza. I'm not sure why it occurs and do not think it needs to.

Emma,
i was trudging through the pages
and found this.  it's a wonderful
poem.  love how it opens up to
the world and minimalizes the
everyday fodder.

i enjoyed.

emma very lovely.  for me shot by shot bed to room to yard to neighborhood to town to state, etc.  interesting choice of 'sigh' upon waking, for me relaying that there is nothing to look forward to, despite the overwhelmingly large size of the universe that embodies the subject.  lawrence

Emma,

I was pleasantly surprised by shadows of our hands and feet, and then shadows of the words of our mouth and then shadows of sighs. I'd never really stopped to consider any of those things having shadows.  This is a lovely lyric.

And a fine ending, Emma. These lines maybe in the way:

as we bathe in its light
all the fears
are finally gone
